Türkiye-Syria Earthquake Death Toll Passes 5,000

INTERNATIONAL: As rescue workers continued pulling more bodies from the rubble on Tuesday amidst sub-zero temperatures, the death toll from the devastating earthquake to strike Türkiye and Syria Monday morning rose to 5,102.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay confirmed the number of deaths in his country had risen to 3,419, with a further 20,534 injured, while Syria’s count was up to 1,602.

Over 200 aftershocks had been recorded as of early Tuesday, resulting in some 6,000 buildings being destroyed in Türkiye alone, with almost 25,000 rescue workers still on the ground.
